Development of an Animated Film
A downloadable Animation Projekt
About
During my bachelor’s thesis, I conceptualized and developed an animated movie that illustrates the struggles of students with sleep disorders and their impact on daily life. My focus was on visualizing the emotions and psychological pressure that come with insomnia. The project is divided into two parts: the practical development of the movie and the documentation of the process.
Description of the storyline
The story follows a student navigating a restless night, from sunset to sunrise.
First, intrusive negative thoughts disrupt his focus, represented by glowing spheres whispering discouraging words. As the night progresses, loneliness takes hold—he imagines receiving text messages, clinging to the hope of a response, while a dense fog slowly envelops him. In the final scene, frustration keeps him awake. The relentless ticking of his alarm clock grows louder until a massive clock loom before him, symbolizing time slipping away as he struggles to sleep. As the sun rises, exhaustion takes over, and he is found asleep at his desk, having fought through the night.
Key elements of the visualization
- Symbolic representation of emotions and the burden on those affected
- Stylistic execution and semi-realistic animation of the character
- Atmospheric lighting and rendering of the scenes
- Animation of key effects in alignment with the portrayed emotion
- Creating a visual impression of the illness for the viewer
